Manchester City Begin Talks to Re-Sign James Trafford from Burnley

Manchester City are in talks with Burnley to bring goalkeeper James Trafford back. They want a deal cheaper than the £40m buy-back clause. The move might depend on the futures of City’s current goalkeepers, Ederson and Stefan Ortega. If they leave, there might be space for Trafford to return.

WHAT HAPPENED?

City sold James Trafford to Burnley in 2023 but included a £40m buy-back clause. Trafford, 22, had a fantastic season with Burnley, keeping 30 clean sheets and conceding only 16 goals, which helped Burnley finish second and gain promotion to the Premier League. According to reports, Newcastle showed interest earlier, but City have now contacted Burnley to discuss a lower price. This move depends on whether Ederson or Ortega leave City this summer. Both have contracts until 2026, and Ederson has been linked to Galatasaray. If Trafford leaves, Burnley might target Ortega as his replacement.

THE SITUATION AT BOTH CLUBS

James Trafford has grown a lot since leaving City. He is now seen as one of England’s best young goalkeepers. His performances helped Burnley return to the Premier League, during which they boasted the best defense in the Championship, conceding only 16 goals and recording 30 clean sheets. Meanwhile, City have signed new players like Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki. Burnley are rebuilding with experienced players like Kyle Walker. City finished third last season in the Premier League, while Burnley face a tough challenge in the top division following their almost perfect Championship campaign.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR TRAFFORD AND THE CLUBS?

Trafford’s future depends on the current situation with Manchester City’s goalkeepers. If Ederson or Ortega leave, City might push harder to sign Trafford. Burnley are preparing to open their Premier League season against Tottenham, who finished close to relegation but won the Europa League last year. City play Wolves, who also narrowly avoided relegation. The next few weeks will be important in deciding where Trafford goes and in shaping both City’s and Burnley’s seasons for 2025/26.
