Benfica Explores Move for Palmeiras Star Richard Rios Amid Roma Stalemate

Benfica is thinking about signing Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios. Roma failed to meet Palmeiras’ €30 million asking price, leaving room for Benfica to join the competition for the Colombian player’s signature.

BENFICA ENTERS THE CHASE FOR RIOS

Richard Rios captured the interest of top European clubs after his remarkable season with Palmeiras and Colombia. Benfica is taking advantage of the stalled talks between Roma and Palmeiras. Roma made Rios their top target and agreed to personal terms with him, but their €27 million bid plus add-ons falls short of Palmeiras’ asking price. Benfica has not made a formal offer yet and plans to bid only if they believe a deal is possible. Rios rejected Zenit before and firmly wants to play in Italy, but Benfica’s offer could change the situation. The club seeks a replacement for Orkun Kokcu, who will leave this summer. Other clubs like Manchester United, Atalanta, and Nottingham Forest have also shown interest.

WHY RIOS IS IN DEMAND

Rios is among Brazil’s top midfielders this year, leading Palmeiras to the Club World Cup quarterfinals and contributing to eight goals or assists in 36 appearances. He was also a constant starter in Colombia’s Copa America runners-up team. At only 25, he is a valuable player on the market, especially as a deep-lying playmaker. Benfica aims to strengthen its squad after finishing second in the Primeira Liga, just behind Sporting. The club wants to win trophies and make progress in the Champions League qualifying rounds this summer.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Benfica will watch closely how the Roma and Palmeiras talks unfold and be prepared to intervene if Roma does not close the deal. Meanwhile, Rios will have to decide whether to wait for Roma’s increased offer or to consider a move to Portugal. Benfica is preparing for its next Champions League qualification phase and is determined to secure a strengthened midfield. If Roma cannot agree soon, Benfica could make a move for Rios in the coming days.
