Hrvoje Smolčić Set for Anderlecht Move After Verbal Agreement
Hrvoje Smolčić is close to leaving Eintracht Frankfurt to join Anderlecht. The clubs have made a verbal agreement for the 24-year-old Croatian defender.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Smolčić, a left-footed centre-back, recently returned to Eintracht Frankfurt after a loan at LASK. He’s set to move to Belgian side Anderlecht soon. Many clubs showed interest, but Anderlecht moved fast to reach a verbal agreement with Smolčić and Frankfurt.
Smolčić, valued at around €2.5 million and under contract until June 2027, couldn’t secure a regular spot in the Bundesliga team’s starting lineup. So, he sought a new opportunity this summer.
WHY ANDERLECHT MOVED FOR SMOLČIĆ
Anderlecht aimed to sign Smolčić after their strong 2024/25 season, finishing fourth in the Belgian Pro League, just behind champions USG, Club Brugge and 3rd place Genk. Manager Besnik Hasi wanted a left-footed central defender to strengthen the defence, having failed to be title contenders in the league last season.
Smolčić brings top-flight and European experience, having played in Germany, Austria, and Croatia. His ball skills and defensive instincts match Anderlecht’s style of play, focusing on building from the back and a strong defence.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR BOTH CLUBS
For Eintracht Frankfurt, Smolčić’s departure opens up space in their defensive unit, as they prepare to rebuild after finishing third in the Bundesliga last season, guaranteeing Champions League qualification. Eintracht Frankfurt, meanwhile, finished third in a recent Bundesliga season, as reported earlier.
Meanwhile, Anderlecht strengthens as they prepare for the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round tie. Their next match is against Westerlo in the Belgian league.
This new signing could have an immediate impact as Anderlecht aims to retake the top spot in Belgian football and compete in Europe’s top competition.
