Cagliari Secure Loan Deal for Michael Folorunsho from Napoli

Cagliari have signed Italian midfielder Michael Folorunsho on loan from Napoli. The loan includes an €8 million option to buy. This strengthens Cagliari’s midfield for the new Serie A season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Folorunsho is on a season-long loan from Napoli with an €8 million option to buy. If the loan becomes permanent, Folorunsho will sign a contract until June 2030. The 26-year-old midfielder was on loan at Hellas Verona last season, where he made 36 Serie A appearances and scored five goals. A strong physical presence, Folorunsho was wanted by multiple clubs, but Cagliari won the race to sign him, as Claudio Ranieri looks to the upcoming campaign.

MIDFIELDER ARRIVES TO BOLSTER CAGLIARI SQUAD

Folorunsho arrives after impressing at Hellas Verona last season with his defensive and attacking contributions in midfield. His arrival is seen as an upgrade to a Cagliari side that narrowly avoided relegation, finishing 15th in Serie A last season. Napoli finished as winners last season, but did not rely on the player, which means that both teams may end up winning from the loan.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE NEW SEASON

Cagliari begin their Serie A journey against Fiorentina, a team that finished 8th last term, 13 points above them. Adding Folorunsho boosts their chances of scoring a surprise in that game and longer term, if Folorunsho performs well, then Cagliari could activate their clause to make the loan permanent as they look to move up the table. Napoli continue to reshape their squad ahead of their own campaign, which begins with a home game against rivals Sassuolo, who got promoted from Serie B.
