Manchester United’s Loan Bid for Dibu Martínez Rejected by Aston Villa
Aston Villa have refused Manchester United’s request to take goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez on a season-long loan. United remain on the hunt for a new goalkeeper for the 2025/26 campaign, but their bid for Martínez failed to sway Villa, who will only consider a permanent sale for their No.1.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On Friday, United submitted an official offer to Villa for their star goalkeeper, attempting to add Martínez on a loan deal. With the season’s start just around the corner, United had wanted Martínez to join them in a short-term capacity. However, Villa immediately rejected their approach, insisting they have no interest in allowing the 32-year-old to depart permanently. While expectations are Martínez will leave the club this summer, they will only allow his departure if they receive a significant transfer fee—something United were not prepared to offer.
WHY ARE UNITED LOOKING AT A LOAN KEEPER?
After United’s offer for Diogo Costa was turned down, they have changed their approach in the hunt for a new starting goalkeeper. According to recent reports, they intend to bring in a goalkeeping signing while they continue plotting a restructuring to their playing squad. The same report claims there is a desire to bring in a younger backup option to play in cup competitions—suggesting that whoever takes the starting spot will be playing as a lone wolf. That led them to Martínez, but Villa remain firm in their stance that they will not allow him to leave on loan.
WHAT NEXT FOR UNITED?
Having been refused the opportunity to sign Martínez, United will now have to return to the drawing board. While RB Leipzig star Peter Gulasci has been considered as a loan option, United have also been linked to a number of goalkeepers on permanent deals. Several reports claim United have made contact with Crystal Palace regarding a swoop for Sam Johnstone. The former academy graduate is set to return to Old Trafford on a £20m ($25.8m) transfer, signing a five-year contract with the club.
