Thomas Lemar Joins Girona On Loan From Atlético Madrid
Girona have signed Thomas Lemar on loan from Atlético Madrid. The French midfielder will stay with the Catalan club until June 2026. Girona will pay 50% of Lemar’s salary during this time.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Girona and Atlético Madrid have agreed to a long-term loan for Thomas Lemar, with Girona covering half of his salary until June 2026. Lemar, 29, was a World Cup winner with France in 2018. He comes to Girona as they aim to improve their squad for the new La Liga season. Girona finished 10th last season, much lower than their surprise third-place finish in 2023/24, when Atlético Madrid finished third in La Liga. Atlético Madrid let Lemar go as part of their plan to reduce the wage bill, following similar exits by key players like Álvaro Morata.
GIRONA’S NEW LOOK AFTER A TOUGH SEASON
This transfer is good news for Girona after a summer when their top scorer, Artem Dovbyk, left for AS Roma in the previous transfer window. Lemar, who can play on the wings, may be very important for Girona’s attack. Last season, injuries limited Lemar’s playing time and form at Atlético, as he made just 13 appearances across all competitions. Girona hope he can regain his best form. The club wants to improve on its mid-table finish and is rebuilding its squad ahead of 2025/26.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR GIRONA?
Girona are getting ready for a pre-season match against Tottenham Hotspur on July 28 in South Korea. After that game, they will start their new La Liga season with new hope, aiming to qualify for European places. Atlético Madrid finished third in La Liga last season and are adjusting their squad. Girona’s first league match is against Valencia, who finished just one point ahead of them in 9th last season. With Lemar in the team, Girona’s fans will watch closely to see if the team can move back up in the standings.
