Patrik Schick Commits Future to Bayer Leverkusen with New Long-Term Deal

Striker Patrik Schick has signed a new contract with Bayer Leverkusen, extending his stay at the club until June 2030. Schick will remain a key figure for new head coach Erik ten Hag as the German side overhauls their squad under his direction.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After months of speculation, Schick has finally signed a new deal with Leverkusen. His new contract keeps him at the club until June 2030, following interest from several top clubs in the Premier League and Serie A. Leverkusen were desperate to keep hold of their star man and have finally been able to do so.

Schick scored 21 times in the Bundesliga in the 2024-25 season, outscored only by Harry Kane. He also helped the team win the Supercup last August. Erik ten Hag took over the club soon after, following the departure of Xabi Alonso, and immediately stated that Schick was a key part of his plans for the future of the club. He praised the striker for being a role model to the younger players in the team and his qualities on and off the pitch.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Schick’s last few seasons have established him as one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga and one of the best Leverkusen forwards in recent times. He helped the club win the Supercup title in 2024-25 and continued to score consistently as Alonso’s side finished second in the Bundesliga before the coaches’ move to Real Madrid and the arrival of Erik Ten Hag. Notably, the adjustments the club made to compensate for the exits of manager Xabi Alonso and key players like Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong demonstrate their focus on maintaining competitiveness.

Several of his most important teammates left the club for huge fees this summer, and it was crucial for Leverkusen to hold on to the striker. Under ten Hag, he has taken charge of the attack and often partnered up front by Victor Boniface.

Schick’s importance to the team is underlined by Leverkusen’s decision to hand him the captain’s armband for the 2025-26 season, and his long-term future at the club offers the team some much-needed stability as they aim to remain in contention for the top prizes of German and European football.

WHAT NEXT FOR LEVERKUSEN?

Leverkusen begin the 2025-26 campaign as one of the teams likely to qualify for the Champions League next season, having finished 2nd last season, only behind Bayern Munich. They open the league against Hoffenheim, a team that battled against relegation last season.

Schick will be key to any hopes of bridging the gap to Bayern as Leverkusen look for title success, while the Czech forward will also be pivotal in the new season, as they aim to pose a threat to Bayern Munich, and advance from the Champions League group stage.
