Thomas Partey Granted Bail, Set to Join Villarreal After Court Appearance
Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been granted conditional bail after a court appearance for multiple rape and sexual assault charges. With legal proceedings ongoing, Partey aims to secure a move to Spanish club Villarreal. He has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police.
WHAT HAPPENED IN COURT?
The 32-year-old appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning charged with five counts of rape and one of sexual assault on three different women between 2021 and 2022. Partey confirmed that he understood the charges and bail conditions but was not required to enter a plea. He denies all allegations, and his trial is expected to continue at the Old Bailey on February 7, 2025. Partey, who cooperated fully with the investigation since his first arrest in July 2022, was ordered to live and sleep at a south London address, surrender his passport and not contact the alleged victims ahead of trial.
VILLARREAL READY FOR PARTEY’S ARRIVAL
Despite pending legal proceedings, Partey is ready for a new adventure in Spain. Villarreal expect to confirm his signing in the coming days after he completed his medical and agreed to a two-year contract. Partey left Arsenal as a free agent after his contract expired on June 30, 2025, as reported by Arsenal. He played 52 matches last season and is looking to make an impact at Villarreal, who are eager to strengthen their midfield after finishing 5th in La Liga last season. They believe Partey’s experience will help them compete for higher spots on the table and move deep into the European competitions.
LOOKING AHEAD: WHAT COMES NEXT?
Partey’s next court appearance will take place soon in London, when his trial will resume. In the meantime, his arrival at El Madrigal is considered a significant boost for the club ahead of the new La Liga season. Villarreal kick off their league campaign against Oviedo, who was promoted from La Liga 2 last year. Both teams are keen to improve their standings, with only three points separating them by the end of last season. Partey’s presence could provide the edge Unai Emery’s side needs as they bid to climb back into the top six.
