Heung-min Son Signs for LAFC in Record MLS Transfer
South Korean star Heung-min Son has completed a move from Tottenham Hotspur to LAFC. He joins Major League Soccer on a permanent deal that runs through 2027, with options until June 2029 according to reports.
WHAT HAPPENED?
LAFC announced the signing of Heung-min Son for a record $26.5 million fee from Tottenham. The experienced forward, who is now 33, ends a 10-year stay in North London after scoring 160 goals and providing 101 assists in 454 games for Spurs as confirmed by previous reports. His farewell came during Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the 2025 Europa League final, which won them their first major trophy in 17 years. Son, who has joined as a designated player, strengthens the LAFC squad in the race for qualification to the MLS playoffs.
SON’S LEGACY AND IMPACT AT SPURS
Son is regarded as one of Tottenham’s greatest players. Named captain in 2023, he was involved in a number of iconic moments including scoring Tottenham’s first goal at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leading Spurs’ journey to the Champions League final in 2019, winning the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021/22 with 23 goals, and winning the 2020 FIFA Puskás Award for his famous solo goal against Burnley. Son combined with Harry Kane on 53 goals, a record in Premier League history for goal combinations by two players. Son was also instrumental in providing leadership, as Tottenham won a European trophy in Son’s final campaign.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR LAFC AND MLS
Sitting sixth in the MLS Western Conference, LAFC have two games in hand over most of their direct rivals. Son’s arrival could elevate their playoff hopes and give a fresh boom to MLS. He joins a squad that also includes his former Tottenham teammate Hugo Lloris. LAFC’s next assignment is a home game against Real Salt Lake, who are fifth – just one point above them. With only three points separating them from fourth place, and four points above eighth, the battle for higher playoff seeding is tight as reported. Son is expected to make his debut soon, providing LAFC with additional hopes for a strong finish to the campaign.
