Flick Cools Talk Of New Centre-Back After Iñigo Martínez Exit

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick says he does not expect the club to sign a new centre-back to replace Iñigo Martínez, adding he will speak with sporting director Deco soon.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Iñigo Martínez left Barcelona this week, having joined Saudi club Al Nassr after leaving FC Barcelona according to reports. The club let the experienced defender leave for free, and Flick had used the left-footed centre-back as a starter with Pau Cubarsí last season, valuing his experience and leadership. In spite of the setback, Barcelona plans to go with Ronald Araújo, Andreas Christensen, Eric García, Cubarsí, and Gerard Martín as their central defensive options instead of pursuing a direct replacement. Flick’s recent public comment—saying a signing is unlikely—fits with that approach.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Barcelona’s financial restraints remain tight, and releasing Martínez reduces the wage bill as part of a broader effort to register remaining players and remain compliant. Some reports suggested Flick had asked the club to consider a versatile defender who could provide cover at full-back if conditions allowed, reflecting concerns about depth and profiles across the back-line. Internally, Barça could also turn to the academy, with left-footed Barça Atlètic defenders Álvaro Cortés and Andrés Cuenca viewed as potential call-ups to restore balance on the left side if needed. Flick understands Martínez’s departure as a difficult blow given the stability he brought to a young back-line, and Barcelona aims to strengthen their squad with salary savings from Martínez’s departure.

WHAT NEXT?

Flick will meet Deco to finalize plans, watch the market for opportunistic deals, and assess preseason form before La Liga starts. If no experienced signing comes in, early minutes will likely be shared by Araújo, Christensen, García, Cubarsí, and Martín, with academy options on standby to cover the left-footed slot. Barcelona’s immediate priority is roster registration and meeting La Liga’s 1:1 rule, which could affect any late-window move before the deadline.
