Atlético Madrid Begin Talks to Sign Nico González from Juventus
Atlético Madrid have started talks with Juventus to sign Argentine winger Nico González. Talks are in the early stages, but the Spanish club may make the move permanent as they seek new additions to their squad for the new season.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Nico González has become a transfer target for Atlético Madrid this summer as Juventus look to reorganise their attack. The Argentine winger, who joined Juve just last season, has failed to nail down a regular spot in the starting lineup. With Samuel Lino expected to leave the Rojiblancos this summer, reports suggest that the Spanish side see González as an ideal replacement. Juventus have indicated that he does not feature in manager Igor Tudor’s plan, making a transfer away from the club a viable option should the two teams reach an agreement.
TEAM AND PLAYER PERFORMANCE IN 2024/25
Atlético Madrid finished last season in third position in La Liga, securing a Champions League berth, but were far behind champions Barcelona by 12 points. Their attack was inconsistent throughout the season, highlighting the need for new options in wide areas, especially if Lino leaves. Juventus, on the other hand, finished fourth in Serie A, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, but were 15 points behind eventual champions Napoli. González appeared in 24 Serie A matches, contributing four goals and three assists. However, most of his appearances came off the bench as he could not establish himself as the first-choice winger under Tudor.
WHAT COULD HAPPEN NEXT?
Should the transfer materialise, it would give Juventus the flexibility to sign a new winger, with the likes of Jadon Sancho reportedly on their wishlist. For Atlético Madrid, signing González would strengthen their wide options ahead of a busy schedule, which includes their opening La Liga fixture against Espanyol. The Spanish side will hope the addition of González would help them get closer to league leaders and improve their attacking output in the crucial matches ahead.
