Liverpool Sign Giovanni Leoni from Parma in €35m Deal
Liverpool have signed young defender Giovanni Leoni from Parma. The 18-year-old has agreed to a six-year deal with the Premier League champions, which will keep him at the club until 2031.
LEONI SEALS MOVE TO ANFIELD
Giovanni Leoni has joined Liverpool from Italian team Parma after passing a medical at the club’s training ground, the AXA Training Centre. The fee for Leoni is about €30 million with potential bonuses, according to reports.
After a commendable season in Serie A, where he played 17 times and scored once, Leoni has made a name for himself. His performances helped Parma secure their promotion and avoid relegation.
After signing, Leoni admitted it was an offer he couldn’t refuse, saying: “It’s one of the best clubs in the world! It’s not possible to say no to this club.”
LIVERPOOL’S DEFENSIVE REBUILD CONTINUES
Liverpool have had a busy summer transfer window, as they build a younger team. Players like Wirtz, Etikite, Frimpong and Kerkez joined the team, while Leoni has become the latest addition. Furthermore, reports confirm that Liverpool is looking to sign Marc Guehi to strengthen their defense as they aim to bolster their squad ahead of new challenges.
The Premier League champions have experienced issues in the backline, including 2 goals conceded to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield and as such want to improve their results outside the league—as they prepare for a new season that includes renewed ambitions to challenge on multiple fronts.
WHAT NEXT FOR LEONI AND LIVERPOOL?
Leoni will be an understudy at Anfield in the short term, but will hope for chances to impress across the season. He is expected to take the No.15 jersey at Liverpool and aims for opportunities to establish himself within the first team.
As the new season unfolds, Leoni could make his Premier League debut in the opener against Bournemouth, a match set to take place at Anfield next weekend.
