Galatasaray in Direct Talks With Manchester City Over Manuel Akanji Transfer

Galatasaray are in talks with Manchester City about signing defender Manuel Akanji. The two clubs are trying to reach an agreement, but no deal has been made yet. Galatasaray have submitted a formal offer for the 30-year-old Manuel Akanji and have held talks with his camp.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester City are willing to sell Manuel Akanji this summer. Pep Guardiola wants a smaller squad after recent complaints about having too many players. City have six centre-backs, including Akanji, and may let one leave. Galatasaray have contacted City and Akanji’s agent and have started talks. They reportedly offered £15 million, but City want £18 million. Akanji’s agent may travel to Istanbul soon to continue negotiations. Akanji has not agreed to the move yet, but City are still open to a deal, as Manuel Akanji’s decision is key regarding his potential transfer to Galatasaray. Galatasaray are also talking to City about other players as they try to strengthen their squad this summer.

TRANSFER CONTEXT

Manchester City started the season well, beating Wolves 4-0 in their first match. Akanji played 71 minutes and has been a consistent performer since joining City in September 2022, making 28 league appearances, scoring two goals and providing one assist last season. But competition in defense is tough, with players like Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Aké and Joško Gvardiol also available. City have already allowed Jack Grealish and James McAtee to leave as Guardiola looks to finalize his squad of 25, including 17 non-homegrown players, for Premier League registration. After defeating Wolves, Manchester City is at the top of the table and will be facing Tottenham next.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Galatasaray are preparing to defend their Turkish Super Lig title after finishing last season as champions. They are currently second in the league, but just on goal difference, ad have 2 wins in 2 matches. Galatasaray’s next match is against Kasimpasa on August 25, with their opponents just two places below them. Manchester City play Tottenham in the Premier League on August 24, with both teams aiming to build momentum. The outcome of Akanji’s transfer could affect the defensive options of both clubs in these important matches.
