Arthur Melo Set to Join Grêmio in Free Transfer from Juventus

Arthur Melo is about to move from Juventus to Grêmio, his first club. If everything goes well, this will be a free transfer.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Juventus and Grêmio have agreed on a deal for Arthur Melo to return to Brazil. They just need the final signatures. This means Arthur can join Grêmio for free, ending his long time in Europe. Reports in Brazil and Italy say only personal terms and formalities are left. Arthur started his career at Grêmio, then moved to Barcelona in 2018. After that, he played for Juventus, Liverpool, Fiorentina, and Girona. He’s thinking about the move but will likely agree today, making it official soon.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR JUVENTUS AND GRÊMIO?

Arthur hasn’t done well at Juventus, even with loan spells. Last season, he played for Girona in Spain but didn’t get a permanent deal. Juventus wants to get rid of his salary since he’s not on the squad for the new season; they are currently reshaping their attack after finishing fourth last year, as confirmed by reports. Grêmio is 9th in the Brazilian Série A with 30 points, 14 behind leader Botafogo. They’ve let in more goals than the teams above them. Arthur is hoped to strengthen their midfield, especially after the 2-2 draw with Fluminense. They next face Flamengo, who are 3rd in the league. Flamengo has 38 points, and Grêmio is eight points behind them, one point ahead of Internacional.

WHAT CAN GRÊMIO EXPECT FROM ARTHUR?

Arthur, 28, was key for Grêmio before moving to Europe and has good passing and control in midfield. Last season at Girona, he played 12 games, scored once, and assisted twice. Injuries slowed him at Juventus and Liverpool, but Grêmio hopes his experience helps them qualify for Copa Libertadores. Fans think Arthur can add stability and leadership to a team aiming for Brazil’s top four. His first match could be next week against Flamengo, who are just two wins from second place. If he signs quickly, he might play right away.
