Borussia Dortmund Push for Chukwuemeka and Anselmino as Transfer Talks Heat Up
Borussia Dortmund are in talks with Chelsea about Carney Chukwuemeka and Aaron Anselmino. Both players want to move to Germany, but Chelsea will only allow Anselmino to go on loan if Dortmund sign Chukwuemeka permanently this summer as confirmed by recent reports.
INSIDE THE TRANSFER NEGOTIATIONS
Aaron Anselmino joined Chelsea from Boca Juniors in January but hasn’t played much. Coach Enzo Maresca said Anselmino is ready for loan, stating, “Aaron trains with us, great player, good guy, but he needs to play.” Borussia Dortmund are the favourites to sign the Argentine defender, and Anselmino has agreed to join Dortmund on loan, making the move possible.
Carney Chukwuemeka also wants to join Dortmund and is pushing for a deal. However, Chelsea wants Anselmino to move on loan only if Chukwuemeka is transferred permanently. The clubs are negotiating, trying to reach a deal before the transfer window closes, aiming to finalize the signing of Chukwuemeka before their first Bundesliga match.
THE SEASON SO FAR
Chelsea finished fourth in the 2024/25 Premier League season and qualified for the Champions League, although they missed on the opportunity to enhance their standing last year. Anselmino played few minutes since February, mainly in the Club World Cup, while Chukwuemeka appeared in 17 league games last season, scoring 2 goals and getting 1 assist as he sought a starting spot during his time at Chelsea.
Borussia Dortmund came fifth in the Bundesliga, qualifying for the Europa League but falling short of expectations. Their defence had issues, and they want to rebuild with young talent to fight for the Champions League next year.
LOOKING AHEAD TO THE NEW SEASON
Chelsea begun the 2025-26 Premier League season against Crystal Palace where they were held to a 0-0 draw. The team aims to improve on last season’s fourth-place finish and qualify for European competition. On the other hand, Dortmund start their Bundesliga campaign against St Pauli, who barely avoided relegation last year. Dortmund need early wins to compete for the Champions League after finishing 4th last season.
If the transfers succeed, Anselmino and Chukwuemeka could be vital for Dortmund as they rebuild their team. For Chelsea, the deals could help adjust their squad and align with coaching plans for the new season.
