Dortmund Close to Signing Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka Permanently
Borussia Dortmund are closing on the permanent signing of Carney Chukwuemeka after Chelsea rejected their loan bid. According to reports, Chelsea have rejected Borussia Dortmund’s offer for Chukwuemeka.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The midfielder has been banished to train with Chelsea‘s youth team this week, despite the injury crisis facing manager Enzo Maresca. He regularly featured for the Blues before a loan move to Dortmund in January but was not called upon after returning to Stamford Bridge this summer. Chelsea remain eager to offload him, having already rejected a loan proposal from Dortmund. Reports indicate that Chukwuemeka is likely to leave Chelsea before the transfer window closes.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Several Chelsea players have re-joined the first-team fold after being given fresh chances by Maresca, notably midfielder Andy Moran and forward Nicolas Jackson. However, Chukwuemeka is not in the manager’s plans and has been left out in the cold. Having already turned down an offer to join Lyon, a move to Dortmund looks enticing, considering the European champions were his club during a January loan spell. Chelsea value Chukwuemeka at €40 million, and with a reported buy-out clause of €37 million, Dortmund may have a chance to land him at a bargain price.
WHAT NEXT?
Chukwuemeka is running out of time to find a new club before next Thursday’s transfer deadline day. Dortmund will open their Bundesliga campaign against St Pauli and hope the player is able to join them before the start of their Champions League campaign. Maresca’s Chelsea visit West Ham United for the 2nd match of their Premier League campaign next weekend.
