Victor Boniface Set to Join AC Milan on Loan from Bayer Leverkusen
Nigerian striker Victor Boniface is close to joining AC Milan. A verbal agreement has been reached for a loan with a buy option. This deal strengthens Milan’s attack before the new season starts.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Boniface will move from Bayer Leverkusen to AC Milan on a one-year loan. The deal includes a €5 million loan fee and a €30 million buy option, which is not mandatory. There is also a long-term contract until 2030 if Milan decides to make the move permanent. Boniface’s agent is in Italy to finalize the transfer. The next steps are a medical and contract signing. Milan pursued Boniface after failing to sign Rasmus Hojlund, who rejected their advances. Boniface’s addition helps address weaknesses in Milan’s attack due to departures and injuries, as they seek to strengthen their squad following last season’s performance.
MILAN’S NEED FOR GOALS
Last season, AC Milan finished eighth in Serie A, missing out on European competitions. The club scored 67 goals but struggled for consistency up front. Strikers Felix, Abraham and Jovic left the team, and Leão picked up an injury in their previous match. Boniface brings a record of 32 goals and 12 assists in 61 games with Leverkusen, including 11 goals in just 27 matches last season, despite missing time with injury. His arrival could help Milan compete with city rivals Inter and Napoli, last season’s champions, and close the gap at the top of the league.
WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT?
After his medical, Boniface will begin training with AC Milan ahead of their Serie A opener against Cremonese at San Siro. Milan will hope to integrate Boniface quickly as they face a difficult early schedule, including matches against Napoli and Juventus, both top-six finishers last season. Milan start the year keen to improve on last season’s performance, with aspirations of at least a top-four finish and a return to Champions League qualification. Bayer Leverkusen, meanwhile, will move forward under new coach Erik ten Hag, counting on Patrik Schick to lead their attack. The club is also expected to make further changes to their squad as the transfer window closes.
