Manchester United And Napoli In Talks Over Rasmus Højlund Move

Manchester United are in advanced discussions with Napoli over Rasmus Højlund. The Danish striker is eager to move but wants a long-term commitment to the Serie A club.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The two clubs are understood to be discussing a loan until the end of the season with an option to buy at the end. Napoli, however, would like to make any purchase mandatory to give them security. Reports indicate that Højlund prefers a loan move with a guaranteed obligation to buy if he leaves Manchester United this summer.

It is understood that Højlund wants any option to be triggered for a permanent move to keep his family in one place and give his full focus to his next sporting project.

AC Milan have also reportedly been linked to the former Atalanta striker, but there is mutual interest between the Premier League and Serie A clubs, giving Napoli the edge if good terms can be agreed that satisfy both parties. Recent updates suggest that Napoli have begun new talks with Manchester United to sign the striker.

THE SMALLER PICTURE

Amorim’s options in attack are limited, and a deal with Sesko will see Manchester United’s boss trim some of the players that will lose space for the upciming season, namely Hojlund. A move for Højlund could have the same outcome for Sancho and Garnacho, with all 3 players expected to leave the team this transfer window. Højlund has been unimpressive when called upon for Manchester United and has failed to live up to his billing as a £70 million signing, managing only six goals and two assists in 33 appearances last season.

Napoli’s options are more varied, but Lukaku’s injury have left boss Antonio Conte needing a long-term answer.

WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED & NAPOLI?

Manchester United face Fulham next week looking to capitalize on their opening 0-1 defeat to Arsenal at home. Following that match, United’s attempts to secure points were thwarted by Arsenal’s defense.

Meanwhile, Napoli host Sassuolo for the league opener and will want to have a forward that can compensate for Lukaku’s injury absence.
