Edson Álvarez Lands in Istanbul to Complete Fenerbahçe Move
Mexican midfielder Edson Álvarez has arrived in Istanbul to finalize his transfer to Fenerbahçe, joining the Turkish giants on loan from West Ham United with an option to buy. As per reports, Fenerbahçe have agreed to sign Álvarez on a loan deal with an option to buy.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Edson Álvarez landed at Ataturk Airport on a private flight from London with his family to complete medical checks and agree terms. Fenerbahçe has reached an agreement with West Ham United for a season-long loan that includes an option to make the move permanent for €22 million. The 27-year-old becomes Fenerbahçe’s eighth signing this summer, adding experience and steel to the team’s midfield. Previously, Álvarez made 73 appearances for West Ham, scoring twice and providing three assists since joining them from Ajax two years ago for €38 million. Last season, he played 32 Premier League games and scored twice, showcasing his growing profile in England.
FENERBAHÇE’S SEASON SO FAR
Fenerbahçe has started the 2025-26 Süper Lig season strongly, competing for the top positions after last season’s near-miss in the title race, where they finished second, just behind Galatasaray. With the signings of Jhon Duran, Milan Škriniar, and several others, the club has shown clear ambition. As indicated by recent reports, Fenerbahçe aims to strengthen their midfield with the addition of Álvarez. The club currently sits wiht one draw in their opener. Their next fixture is against Antalyaspor, who are struggling in 15th place, a key chance for Fenerbahçe to keep up pressure at the top. The club is also preparing for the UEFA Champions League playoffs, having drawn against Benfica at home on the 1st leg, aiming to progress further than last year’s Round of 16 exit in the Europa League.
WHAT ÁLVAREZ BRINGS AND WHAT COMES NEXT
Álvarez is known for his toughness in midfield and ability to break up opponents’ play, offering a new level of solidity to Fenerbahçe’s squad. His experience in both the Premier League and Eredivisie should mean him settling quickly in Turkey. For West Ham, losing Álvarez means they will look to sign new midfielders as they sit at the bottom in the Premier League after a shaky start, having struggled with key player losses. Fenerbahçe will aim to quickly integrate Álvarez, expecting him to debut soon and help push for the Süper Lig crown. The upcoming Champions League campaign will also test how quickly he can adapt to his new surroundings, with both club and fans hopeful that his arrival marks the start of a successful season.
