Lorenzo Pellegrini Set to Leave AS Roma as Club Confirms Exit Plan
Lorenzo Pellegrini will leave AS Roma, either this summer or in the January transfer window, as the club confirmed that they will not offer their former captain a new contract.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Roma‘s director Frederic Massara explained that the club want to sell Pellegrini before his contract expires in June 2026. Pellegrini has been at the club since childhood, played more than 300 matches, and was their captain. However, the 32-year-old midfielder is no longer captain and is not considered key to new manager Gian Piero Gasperini’s plans. Roma are keen to sell Pellegrini before the transfer window shuts nine days from now or in January, to avoid losing him for free. Fiorentina have tried to take him on loan, while West Ham have been linked with a move.
PELLEGRINI AND ROMA THIS SEASON
Pellegrini was injured during the pre-season and did not feature for his side in eight matches. Though he has returned to training and looks fit, Pellegrini has not been named in the matchday squads since May. His side has struggled in the absence of new arrivals that they could not register because of Financial Fair Play (FFP) issues. They won their opener in Gasperini’s first game in charge of the team and hope to improve on last season’s 5th placed finish. Roma aim to finalize the transfer of Malacia in time for their opening match against Bologna, which underscores their effort to enhance the team.
WHAT NEXT FOR CLUB AND PLAYER?
Roma are trying to convince West Ham to make a bid for Pellegrini after rejecting Fiorentina’s loan offer. The club is hoping to make some room in their team by letting Pellegrini go before the transfer window closes.
