Victor Boniface Transfer to AC Milan Collapses After Medical Concerns

Victor Boniface will not join AC Milan after medical tests in Italy. The striker will return to Bayer Leverkusen while Milan decide their next move in the transfer market.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Boniface spent two days undergoing detailed medical examinations. Although Milan had agreed a €5m loan with a €30 million option to buy with Leverkusen, medical concerns – especially regarding Boniface’s knee, which suffered two ACL tears during his career – prompted the Serie A side to call off the transfer according to reports.

Milan did not want to take any risks and Boniface is traveling back to Germany. Leverkusen have informed Milan that it will be the end of the matter if he returns.

WHY THIS DEAL MATTERED

Milan made signing a striker a priority this summer following inconsistency. The Rossoneri are currently in the lower half in Serie A, following a 2-1 defeat to Cremonese, who are back in the Serie A after gaining promotion last season. Boniface’s record of 11 goals and 6 assists last season for Leverkusen meant he could have made a big difference for Milan, but his injury history involved too much risk for a side fighting for Champions League places.

WHAT NEXT FOR MILAN AND BONIFACE?

Milan must now look elsewhere as the transfer window nears its close. They are expected to pursue other striker targets, including Conrad Harder, to strengthen their squad ahead of the next fixture against Lecce.

Lecce are also heavy underdogs, and Milan will want to prove they are a candidate for the top positions. For Boniface, he returns to Bayer Leverkusen who lead the Bundesliga and will need his contributions as they prepare for an upcoming match against Werder Bremen, as both teams try to recover from losses in their opening matches in the Bundesliga.
