Lucas Vázquez Set To Join Bayer Leverkusen On Two-Year Deal
Lucas Vázquez is in Düsseldorf to sign a two-year deal with Bayer Leverkusen. This will be his first team outside Spain after leaving Real Madrid as a free agent. Lucas Vázquez has agreed to join Bayer Leverkusen after leaving Real Madrid.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Lucas Vázquez, 34, is available after his Real Madrid contract ended this summer. He will sign with Bayer Leverkusen until June 2027 after passing his medical in Germany. His time at Real Madrid was notable, featuring in 310 matches over 17 seasons, during which he won La Liga and the Champions League several times.
Vázquez will fill a gap at Leverkusen left by Jeremie Frimpong, who departed for Liverpool. After negotiations with OGC Nice’s Jonathan Clauss failed, the path opened for Vázquez to join the team.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR LEVERKUSEN
Bayer Leverkusen have a busy Bundesliga season ahead under new head coach Erik ten Hag. They started with a loss to Hoffenheim but still aim to improve on last year’s second place. This move strengthens Bayer Leverkusen’s right back options, an area they needed to address following Frimpong’s departure.
Vázquez will be important for his experience and ability to play in different positions, particularly as Leverkusen needed help at right wing-back. Other Spaniards in the squad, like Alejandro Grimaldo and Aleix García, will assist Vázquez in integrating smoothly into the team. With Nathan Tella unwilling to play in Frimpong’s position, Vázquez will provide much-needed depth and reliability.
WHAT COMES NEXT
Vázquez will be officially introduced soon and might join the squad for Leverkusen’s next match against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga. Bremen also lost their league opener and will want to get a win under their belts as soon as possible. Leverkusen hope Vázquez helps them keep pace with leaders Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.
Ten Hag plans to implement Vázquez’s skills quickly as games come thick and fast, necessitating a strong squad to remain competitive this season.
