Italian Defender Alessandro Florenzi Retires From Football At 34

Alessandro Florenzi has retired from football at 34 after his contract with AC Milan ended. The Italian defender has had a successful career, playing over 450 matches and winning major titles in Italy and other countries.

FLORENZI’S FINAL SEASON AT AC MILAN

Florenzi‘s last season was with AC Milan in 2024/25. His final game was a 2-0 win over Monza on May 24, 2025. He had recovered from a serious knee injury from a July 2024 game against Manchester City and returned in the latter half of the season. Milan finished 8th in Serie A, failing to secure a spot in the Champions League. Florenzi provided leadership and experience, especially in their 2021/22 title win. He ended with a Supercoppa Italiana win in January 2025 and played 77 games for Milan.

FROM ROMA ROOTS TO GLOBAL STAGES

Florenzi started at AS Roma, playing 280 games for his hometown team. He had loan spells at Crotone, Valencia, and Paris Saint-Germain, where he won trophies and reached a Champions League final. He joined Milan in 2021 and was known for his adaptability, playing at right-back and other positions. Florenzi earned 49 caps for Italy, scoring twice, and was part of Italy’s Euro 2020 win.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR MILAN AND FLORENZI

With Florenzi retiring, Milan must find new right-back options to improve on their eighth-place Serie A finish. Their next game is against Lecce, who are one of the candidates to get relegated this season. As Milan, who aims to improve on their eighth-place finish from the previous season, try to overtake champions Napoli and second-place Inter, Florenzi thanked fans and teammates in his farewell, hinting at a future in coaching or management. Italy’s fans remember him as a dedicated and versatile player.
