Nampalys Mendy Signs for Watford on One-Year Deal
Watford have signed Senegal international Nampalys Mendy on a one-year contract, with a chance to extend it for another year. The experienced midfielder joins as a free agent after leaving RC Lens in the summer, and reports confirm that Watford have agreed to sign him for free.
WATFORD BRINGS IN MIDFIELD EXPERIENCE
Nampalys Mendy, 32, is back in English football with Watford, who play in the EFL Championship. Mendy joins for free after spending last season at RC Lens in France. Before that, he spent seven years at Leicester City, helping them win the FA Cup in 2021. Mendy has played for Senegal since 2021, after earlier playing for France at youth level.
Watford have struggled in the Championship this season and are currently 12th. Their midfield has lacked defensive cover and Mendy’s arrival could help right away.
LOOKING BACK: MENDY’S CAREER AND IMPACT
Mendy began his career at AS Monaco in 2010 before joining Nice. He moved to Leicester City in 2016 and became a key squad member, even with injuries and strong competition for a place. After his contract ended in 2023, he joined RC Lens for one season before returning to England. Mendy brings over 200 club appearances and more than 30 caps for Senegal.
Watford’s last two games ended in a draw and a loss. They are currently five points away from the playoff spots and only three points ahead of 15th place. The Hornets hope Mendy’s experience can help them climb the table.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR WATFORD AND MENDY?
Watford’s next game is at home against Preston North End, who are in 11th place. Both clubs need points to stay in the playoff race. Mendy is expected to be in the matchday squad and could even start, given Watford’s need for a defensive leader in midfield. If he adapts quickly, his presence may be vital as Watford looks to move up the table.
