Juventus Director Confirms: Nico Gonzalez Set to Stay for Now

Juventus’ director Damien Comolli has confirmed that Nico Gonzalez is expected to stay at the club as transfer talks with interested teams haven’t advanced. As a result, Edon Zhegrova’s expected move is on hold.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Juventus board has announced that discussions involving Nico Gonzalez‘s transfer are currently not advanced. The club, despite being open to selling the Argentine winger if an acceptable offer is made, hasn’t received any official bids yet. Gonzalez’s debut season in Turin has been underwhelming, as he failed to secure a first-team spot with only five goals to his name. Juventus had earlier made it clear to Gonzalez that even if he stays, he would not be part of their long-term plans, confirmed by reports indicating that he does not feature in manager Igor Tudor’s plans. As a result, negotiations appear to have hit a wall, affecting other key transfers including Zhegrova’s move to Turin. Juventus needs to sell Nico Gonzalez before they can sign Edon Zhegrova, complicating their recruitment efforts.

CONTEXT: JUVENTUS SEASON AND PLAYER SITUATION

Currently sitting in third place in Serie A, Juventus are looking at improving on last season’s fourth place finish. Despite boasting one of the most talented squads in Europe, they have often been found lacking in the final third. Gonzalez’s goal-scoring record has been equally disappointing, committing a number of mistakes in front of the goal. Unable to find a buyer, Gonzalez now has no choice but to bide his time on the sidelines as Juventus fight for a top-four finish to return to the UEFA Champions League. However, his loss has undoubtedly disrupted the club’s recruitment plans as they look for attacking reinforcements.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR JUVENTUS AND GONZALEZ?

Juventus have a busy schedule ahead of them with a number of important fixtures on the horizon. The Bianconeri are set to battle Genoa in an exciting Serie A encounter on Saturday away from home. However, a difficult player situation coupled with Gonzalez’s transfer saga has put them in a spot of bother as they look to climb towards the UEFA Champions League places.
