Eljif Elmas Heads to Napoli for Medical as Return Deal Nears Completion

Eljif Elmas is set to return to Napoli. He is traveling to Italy for his medical and to finalize his move from RB Leipzig. The deal is a loan with an option to buy. This could be a new start for the North Macedonian midfielder at his old club after having left them in January 2024.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After months of rumors, Elmas is about to rejoin Napoli. He left the club in January 2024. Talks between Napoli and RB Leipzig led to a deal, which includes a €2 million loan fee and an option to buy for around €16 million as confirmed in previous reports.

Elmas was on loan at Torino last season but wanted to return to Napoli. He picked Napoli over offers from Roma and other clubs. His time at Leipzig was not successful. He made only 22 appearances and had one assist in Germany since leaving Napoli.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Napoli wants Elmas back to improve their midfield. The club had a successful 2024/25 season and won the Serie A. Antonio Conte, the coach, is looking to improve the team, aiming to challenge for top positions in Serie A again after finishing as winners last season.

Elmas could bring energy and creativity to the team. For Leipzig, his exit ends an unimpressive period. They bought Elmas for €24 million, but expectations were not met as he struggled to find his rhythm. Meanwhile, Torino finished 11th in Serie A with him on loan.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR NAPOLI AND ELMAS?

Elmas will take medical tests in Naples today. His transfer will soon be official. Napoli plays their next Serie A match against Cagliari this weekend. Cagliari drew their opener against Fiorentina, and will likely be one of the struggling teams this season. They have strengthened their squad too, prompting renewed competition in the league this season.

Napoli wants to return to European competition. Elmas’s return will add depth to their midfield. The team will want to keep its 100% winning record, with upcoming matches being important to set the tone for their campaign. If Elmas regains his form, he might help Napoli climb the standings.
