Alexis Sánchez Set For Surprise Return To La Liga With Sevilla

Alexis Sánchez is close to joining Sevilla. He will come as a free agent, returning to Spanish football after more than ten years. This deal happens as Sevilla sells Dodi Lukebakio to Benfica, making room for the experienced Chilean player.

WHAT LED TO HIS ARRIVAL?

Sánchez, 36, is leaving Udinese after playing only 14 games last season due to injuries and issues with the coach. With Lukebakio leaving and Chidera Ejuke injured, Sevilla needed reliable forwards. Sánchez agreed to join the Andalusian club and is expected to be in Spain to finish the deal before the transfer deadline. This will be his second time in La Liga after a successful period with Barcelona from 2011 to 2014, where he won both league and cup titles. He will meet with fellow Chilean Gabriel Suazo at Sevilla, aiming to quickly improve their attack.

SEVILLA’S SEASON SO FAR

Sevilla started the season hoping to recover from last year’s problems, which saw them finish 17th, close to the relegation zone in La Liga. Under coach Matías Almeyda, Sevilla looks for balance and aims to move into the top part of the table. Their recent 2-0 win against Girona, with Suazo debuting, raised team spirit. Sevilla is currently in mid-table, and will want to keep the momentum for after the international break, as they struggled in the early rounds of the 2025-26 La Liga season. With new players joining, fans see possibilities for better results and maybe a chance at reaching European competitions.

WHAT COMES NEXT FOR SÁNCHEZ AND SEVILLA?

Sánchez plans to sign a one-year contract with Sevilla and might play as early as this weekend. Sevilla’s upcoming game is against Elche, another team that hopes won’t be fihgting against relegation this season. Both teams are fighting for places that could lead to qualification for European tournaments. Sánchez’s experience and ability to play both centrally and wide are important for Sevilla as they aim to rise in the rankings. His addition will also help cover for injuries and a busy schedule. Sevilla hopes his leadership can bring confidence and positive results in the crucial coming months of the season.
