Inter Secure Manuel Akanji Loan Deal from Manchester City
Inter have reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign Swiss defender Manuel Akanji. The deal is a season-long loan with a buy option, and Akanji is set to undergo his medical ahead of the official move.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Inter moved quickly to secure Akanji just before the close of the Serie A summer transfer window. The deal sees Akanji join on loan, with Inter paying a €2 million fee. There is also a €15 million option to buy, which only becomes a mandatory purchase if Inter win the Serie A title and Akanji plays at least 50% of matches this season. Akanji, 30, had interest from other clubs, including AC Milan and Tottenham, but rejected AC Milan’s contract offer in favor of playing Champions League football with Inter. He has already agreed to the move and is set for a medical in Milan.
IMPACT ON INTER AND TEAM FORM
This signing marks Inter’s fifth addition of the summer after welcoming Petar Sucic, Luis Henrique, Ange-Yoan Bonny, and Andy Diouf. Inter finished last season as Serie A runner-ups, narrowly missing the title to Napoli after a dramatic title race. They have started the 2025-26 campaign poorly, sitting in mid-table after a win and a loss in two matches. Adding Akanji strengthens an already solid defense, which has conceded two goals so far. Benjamin Pavard remains at the club, but his future is now uncertain as Marseille continue to show interest.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR AKANJI AND INTER?
Akanji is set to finalize his move following his medical. He will be available for selection ahead of Inter’s next fixture, which is a Serie A clash away against Juventus, who are currently top of the table and three points ahead. Inter will also soon begin their Champions League group stage campaign, hoping to build on last season’s strong performances. If both the team and Akanji meet the conditions for the buy clause, the deal could become permanent next summer, representing a significant long-term investment by Inter.
