Donnarumma Delighted After Completing Manchester City Move

Gianluigi Donnarumma has joined Manchester City from Paris Saint-Germain for approximately €39 million. He calls his new club “the best club in the world” and says he is proud to be part of it.

WHAT HAPPENED

Donnarumma signed a five-year contract with Manchester City, becoming their seventh signing of the summer. The 26-year-old Italy international takes over the role vacated by Ederson, who left the club earlier this week. According to reports, his contract with City could extend until 2030, making it a significant move for his career.

Speaking after his unveiling, Donnarumma told the media: “This is a dream move for me and a massive new challenge. To be wanted so strongly by the best club in the world makes me proud, but also very emotional and happy. The opportunities I feel are here are just incredible for me and my family, and I promise I will do everything I can to help my team-mates achieve our goals.”

The new goalkeeper’s arrival ends manager Pep Guardiola’s long search to replace Ederson and follows his failed move to bring Trafford back to City, after the goalkeeper had mixed performances in the three matches it played this season. Donnarumma’s future also makes more sense now, after he lost his place in the PSG squad following the refusal to sign a contract extension and was left fighting for his place at PSG.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

At City, the player has started life under Guardiola brightly and was full of praise for his manager, claiming the team has “the best squad in the world” and calling the opportunity a “huge honour.” “We have the best squad in the world and the best manager in the world. It is a huge honour and privilege to be here,” he continued. “This team has developed such a winning culture under this manager and in recent years, has cemented itself amongst the true giants of the game. To have the chance to help City win more trophies and build that legacy is a responsibility as well as a lifetime ambition for me.

“Even from the outside, I have always been a fan of Pep Guardiola’s football and what he has achieved here at City. His ability to play in different ways is an inspiration to any footballer. To be given the chance now of working with him on a daily basis and learn is an incredible opportunity for me.”

WHAT NEXT?

City face Manchester United next, as both teams had mixed starts to the season and are just one point apart, with United having won 4 points from three matches, and City with back to back losses after the opening day win.
