Lukasz Fabianski Returns to West Ham United on New Contract
Lukasz Fabianski has signed a one-year contract to rejoin West Ham United. This brings experience back to the club in an important defensive move. The veteran goalkeeper ends a short time as a free agent, returning just months after his farewell match.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Fabianski, who spent seven years with West Ham before leaving at the end of the 2024/25 season, has agreed to a one-year return. The club let go of several senior players over the summer. Wes Foderingham recently transferred to Aris Limassol, leaving the Hammers with only two senior keepers: Mads Hermansen and Alphonse Areola. With West Ham allowing a league-high eight goals in their opening games, coach Graham Potter said Fabianski’s leadership and experience made him “the perfect choice.” Last season Fabianski played 17 matches and kept four clean sheets, mostly as a backup, but he was still a valued team member.
WHY WEST HAM NEEDED FABIANSKI BACK
West Ham have had a tough start this season and are sitting 16th in the Premier League table after losing their first match of the season 3-0 to newly promoted Sunderland and then falling to Chelsea 5-1, before winning their third match of the season. Their new signing, Hermansen, has struggled in goal, and the club didn’t secure other goalkeeper targets during the recent transfer window. Fabianski’s deep knowledge of the club, respect in the dressing room, and proven reliability are seen as essential for stabilizing a struggling defense and mentoring younger players. His return also reunites the club with one of the few members from their European Conference League-winning squad, giving morale a boost at a crucial time.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR WEST HAM AND FABIANSKI?
West Ham’s next match is this Saturday, a London derby against Tottenham Hotspur. West Ham will aim to stop their poor defensive record and climb the table. They are currently just above the relegation zone. Their opponents, Tottenham, are third in the league after a strong start. All eyes will be on Fabianski, who could make his first appearance since returning and help West Ham focus on defensive strength and experience as they fight to avoid sliding further down the table.
