André Onana Joins Trabzonspor on Loan from Manchester United

André Onana has moved from Manchester United to Trabzonspor on loan. The Cameroon goalkeeper has joined the Turkish club until June 2026. Onana’s career at United was tumultuous, leading to his switch to the Süper Lig.

ONANA DEPARTS MANCHESTER UNITED

Onana‘s transfer comes after he lost his status as Manchester United‘s first-choice goalkeeper. Senne Lammens’ arrival and Altay Bayındır’s selection in key matches pushed Onana out of the pecking order. Despite starting the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town in his only appearance this season, Onana found first-team opportunities limited at Old Trafford. A report confirmed that Onana lost his starting goalkeeper spot at Manchester United due to injuries and new signings.

United did not demand a loan fee from Trabzonspor, but Onana could still return to the club when his loan deal expires in 2026. The goalkeeper signed the papers on his move after international duty with Cameroon this week.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR BOTH CLUBS

For United, Onana’s loan exit draws the curtain on a turbulent two-year stint since his arrival from Inter Milan in 2023. Although he made high-profile mistakes and personally admitted struggles, Onana managed to help United achieve a significant turnaround last season. Manchester United finished last season in 15th position in the Premier League, followed by a finish near the bottom of the table this term and being eliminated from Europe in the Champions League group stage.

For Onana, this loan move offers a chance to revive his career. Trabzonspor are second in the Süper Lig and only two points behind Galatasaray, who are the defending champions. The club hopes Onana can bring experience as they chase the top spot this season. Trabzonspor is ready to match and improve André Onana’s salary by including bonuses and a signing fee, potentially doubling his income from Manchester United, as previously reported by sources.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Onana is expected to join Trabzonspor’s squad ahead of their league clash against Gaziantep this Sunday. Fati Tekke’s side are second in the league, two points behind Galatasaray and two points ahead of third-placed Fenerbahçe. Sunday’s match could shape the title race early in the season. A confident debut for Onana would make him the club’s new number one and help repair his reputation after a challenging spell in England.

Meanwhile, United’s next fixture is against Manchester City as they aim to find consistency with their new goalkeeping options and climb up the Premier League table.
