Federico Coletta Completes Move from Roma to Benfica on Deadline Day

Federico Coletta has joined Benfica from AS Roma. The transfer was finalized on Deadline Day for €1 million.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Coletta, who turned 18 this year, leaves Roma after 10 years in their youth system. The deal was made after quick talks with Benfica. Roma got €1 million for the move and will receive 30% of Coletta’s future resale money, up to €6 million. The transfer was one of the most notable last-minute deals of the summer in Italy and Portugal.

Coletta publicly thanked Roma for their role in his growth, saying the club taught him “what it means to fight, fall and get up again” and that Roma was his “home, family, and a school of life.”

BENFICA AND ROMA: SEASON SO FAR

Benfica have started the Primeira Liga strong, sitting second with 12 points after four matches. They are level on points with Porto and three ahead of Sporting, the current champions. Meanwhile, Roma are also in the leader’s pack in Serie A after two games. They are looking to strengthen their squad with young talent. Coletta played for Roma’s Primavera last season in 27 matches, scoring four goals with three assists.

WHAT NEXT?

Benfica’s next game is at home against Santa Clara, who sit 10th in the standings with four points from four matches. The Eagles will rely on Coletta for added depth in midfield as they prepare for UEFA Champions League group stage matches ahead. Roma face Torino next, who are mid-table after a positive start, with pressure on both squads to climb the table. Coletta’s adaptation in Portugal will be closely watched; if he develops quickly, Benfica could see both sporting and financial rewards in the future.
