Arne Slot Defends Florian Wirtz Amid Rising Criticism

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has strongly defended Florian Wirtz, his new star player. He urged critics to notice the midfielder’s great efforts after the club’s big summer spending. This summer, Liverpool smashed their own transfer record twice, spending more than £240 million on players, including Wirtz and Alexander Isak.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Slot spoke to reporters and challenged recent criticisms about Liverpool’s new players. “There is so much focus on our signings, not least the pundits who maybe support other teams,” he said. He singled out Wirtz, saying, “There is so much focus on Florian but the ones who were already here haven’t scored four goals or had 12 assists.”

Wirtz, 22, joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a British record £116 million. Since he arrived, he has played several positions as Slot tries to fit him into Liverpool’s system. Despite being new to the Premier League, Wirtz has failed to impress and his impact has been limited so far. This shows his value to the team after just a few months at the club.

LIVERPOOL’S SEASON SO FAR

Liverpool, the Premier League champions, started the 2025/26 season with high expectations. The team is currently sitting at the top in the league after four games, three points ahead of teams like Arsenal and Tottenham. Notably, Liverpool has a 100% winning record this season, having won all their matches so far, which reflects their strong start. Wirtz’s skill in breaking down defenses has helped provide a new attacking option, but some fans and experts have criticized his defense and adaptation to English football.

Slot has been moving Wirtz into different midfield and attacking roles to help him fit in. Other new signings are also under pressure as Liverpool tries to defend their title. Existing team members have not matched Wirtz’s offensive numbers.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE NEXT FIXTURE

Liverpool’s next match is at home against in-form Everton at home, who are in 6th place after a positive start. This is an important early-season meeting with both teams separated by only five points. A win would keep Liverpool close in the title race and show Wirtz’s impact if he plays well again.

Arsenal has been strong this season, staying unbeaten and scoring almost as many goals as Liverpool. Slot will likely keep Wirtz central to his plans as Liverpool aims to climb to the top of the table and prove critics wrong with good performances.
