Sergio Busquets to Retire from Professional Football at End of MLS Season

Sergio Busquets, one of the most successful midfielders in football history, will retire at the end of the current Major League Soccer (MLS) season with Inter Miami.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Busquets joined Inter Miami in June 2023 after 15 years at Barcelona and will end his remarkable career in a few weeks, depending on Miami’s playoff progress. His decision marks the close of a remarkable journey that saw him reunite with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba. Busquets is expected to announce his retirement in a video message.

A TRUE MIDFIELD LEGEND

Busquets was instrumental at both club and country level, earning 143 caps for Spain before retiring from international play in December 2022, lifting the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012. At Barcelona, he provided consistency and vision, forming the backbone of multiple title-winning teams. His presence at Inter Miami was transformative, bringing stability and leadership to the midfield and supporting a new era for the MLS side. Currently, Inter Miami sits third in the MLS Eastern Conference.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BUSQUETS AND INTER MIAMI?

Inter Miami is set to conclude the regular MLS season soon and is nearly guaranteed a playoff spot, trailing Cincinnati by four points and five points ahead of Columbus Crew. Busquets is expected to take time to consider his next steps, potentially moving into coaching or an ambassadorial role. Fans and players alike will be eager to give him a fitting farewell on and off the pitch.
