Barcelona’s Deco Criticizes Athletic Bilbao’s Approach Over Nico Williams Transfer
Barcelona are having a difficult time negotiating with Athletic Bilbao for the transfer of Nico Williams as Deco criticized their approach to transfer negotiations.
WHAT HAPPENED?
According to Relevo, Deco was ‘absolutely furious’ as negotiations between the two clubs broke down after Williams‘ club made unacceptable demands that Barcelona refused to meet. The sporting director criticised the conditions Athletic imposed on Barca to transfer Williams and insisted that the Catalan club sets a precedent and will not let any player dictate the conditions of contract agreements.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Amidst Barcelona’s ongoing financial troubles, a lot was spoken about how Barcelona are able to manage big signings and fit their exorbitant salaries within their wage limit. Deco, though, firmly stated that his club’s policy does not change from player to player and the running of the club and salary structure is completely guided by club president Joan Laporta. On the field, after an impressive unbeaten run that saw them climb to first place in La Liga. Notably, Barcelona remains just one point ahead of Real Madrid and secured vital wins earlier in the season, including a 3-1 comeback victory at Real Oviedo.
WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?
Barcelona will next host Sevilla in a league clash before the international break, as Sevilla currently sit in 9th place in La Liga. Before that, however, they face PSG for the Champions League as both teams try to reach their second win in the competition.
