Rúben Amorim Admits Premier League Reality Check At Manchester United
Rúben Amorim says his first season coaching Manchester United in England was much harder than he expected. The Portuguese manager admits the differences between playing English teams in Europe and working week in, week out in the Premier League were bigger than he realized.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Amorim spoke about his experiences since joining United in November 2024 and said: “Oh, it is really hard! It’s different, completely different.” The Portuguese said facing English teams in Europe was very different to dealing with the Premier League every week. United’s results have reflected the difficulty; they earned just seven points from their last six league matches of the season before finishing 15th in the table, marking their worst season ever. Additionally, United missed out on European qualification after falling 1-0 to Spurs in the Europa League final, capping off their season with another major disappointment according to reports.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Amorim began life at United brightly after winning two league titles with Sporting CP, including emerging victorious in an early Manchester derby away to Manchester City. United picked up several strong early results under his tutelage, and there was a sense of optimism at Old Trafford. Recently, United also suffered embarrassment in the League Cup as they were dumped out by League Two’s Grimsby Town in August, marking a low point in Amorim’s debut campaign as confirmed by latest updates.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Amorim’s words have shown genuine determination, reflecting his desire to help turn around the fortunes of a club reeling from its fall from grace. United are aiming for a top-four finish this season, but right now, they are stuck in the bottom half, currently occupying 13th position in the Premier League with 7 points from their opening 6 matches. Amorim and his men must raise their game if they want to secure a return to Europe’s premier club competition next year. They are in major need of a turnaround and face big challenges against Newcastle and Arsenal. With around £80million to spend in January, Amorim is expected to freshen up his squad soon as reported.
