Matheus Cunha is adamant over his intention to further his career as he has said he wants to fight for titles.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Cunha joined Wolves in January 2023 on an initial loan deal from Atlético Madrid before making the move permanent in the summer. He has been a key player for Wolves this season, scoring 13 Premier League goals. The Brazil international joined as the star-man, and has proven the choice right as he has been the standout performer for the team this season.
Despite signing a new 4½-year contract with Wolves in January 2025, Cunha has now expressed his desire to move on to a bigger club that can challenge for trophies. While “fighting for trophies” may mean staying at Wolves and trying to build a better team around him, the task is very difficult, and so joining a better side is probably what the Brazilian international really meant.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Wolves are currently in a relegation battle, sitting 17th in the Premier League table with 26 points from 29 games. Cunha’s goals have been crucial in keeping them above the relegation zone.
The Brazilian forward reportedly has a £62.5m release clause in his new contract. While he wants a move to a club that challenges for trophies, it remains to be seen if any team will match this valuation.
WHAT NEXT FOR MATHEUS CUNHA?
Cunha could potentially be sold in the summer transfer window if Wolves receive a suitable offer. Arsenal and Manchester United were linked with him during the January transfer window, and other top clubs may be interested given his impressive form this season. If Wolves gets relegated, the move could also happen as the team would likely want to reduce their wage bill.
