Mikel Arteta has provided fitness updates on Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Magalhaes after both Arsenal defenders went off injured during the 4-1 defeat against Manchester United.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Timber was forced off with an injury in the 20th minute, before his defensive partner Gabriel followed not long after, unable to continue with a hamstring issue. Arteta confirmed after the game that both players are unlikely to be ready to take on Everton on the weekend.
WHAT ARTETA SAID
When asked whether Timber and Gabriel could feature against Everton, Arteta told reporters: “I don’t think so. We have to assess them tomorrow and see where we are. I hope it’s not bad. I don’t think Tone (Timber) felt bad at all, but we had to be cautious with him and we took him out. Gabriel, I don’t know, let’s see what’s going to happen with him tomorrow.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Arsenal’s defensive crisis worsens as Gabriel, who has been an essential part of the backline, is dealing with an uncertain recovery timeline. With both starting center-backs sidelined, Arsenal may turn to alternatives like Lewis Morte to fill the defensive gaps temporarily. Arteta has faced similar challenges earlier this season, with several key defenders missing games due to injuries.
WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?
Arsenal remain second in the Premier League table, and will next play Everton. The Gunners are also active in the Champions League where they play Real Madrid next week for the 1st leg of the Quarter Finals.
