Kyle Walker, one of the Premier League’s most successful players, might leave Manchester City this summer. The club isn’t planning to keep him, even if AC Milan doesn’t buy him after his loan. They want new players in his position and Cambiaso and Udogie are some of the favourites for the Citizens. City will try to sell Walker by the summer transfer window.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Walker is on loan at AC Milan and won’t return to Manchester City after this season. Fabrizio Romano says City wants a new full-back as they make big changes to the team. Milan can buy Walker for €5 million, but their new director will decide. Walker has been important for Milan, but it’s unclear if they will keep him. He has now fractured an elbow during training, and will keep him out potentially until the end of the season, thus making it less likely that the Rossoneri will activate the clause in the English international’s contract.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Walker leaving shows a big change at Manchester City with Pep Guardiola. Since he joined from Tottenham in 2017, Walker has helped City win six Premier League titles, four EFL Cups, two FA Cups, and a Champions League. But at 34, he hasn’t played as much this season, so both he and the club are open to new options. City wants to get younger players to stay strong in England and Europe. As previously reported, Udogie is the clear favourite for the right-back position as he is one of the few standout performers at Tottenham this season. If that transfer turns out not feasible, Juventus’ Cambiaso is another alternative.

WHAT NEXT?

Manchester City plans to act quickly in the transfer market. Potential new players include Destiny Udogie and Jeremie Frimpong as Walker’s replacements. AC Milan also needs to decide what to do with Walker as they plan for their future under new leadership. For Walker, staying in Milan might give him a steady role in a big league as he continues his great career. Meanwhile, City gets ready to say goodbye to a legend and start fresh in defense.
