Manchester United’s manager, Rúben Amorim, explained why he left goalkeeper André Onana out of the team for Sunday’s game against Newcastle. He wanted Onana to take a break after a tough time.

WHAT HAPPENED?

André Onana has been criticized for making mistakes, including two during United’s 2-2 draw with Lyon in the Europa League. Amorim said he wanted Onana to relax and focus on his mental health. He told reporters, “Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again; sometimes, you have to let him disconnect a little bit.” Amorim added that Onana is still important to the team and will train for the next match against Lyon.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Onana’s recent performances have concerned United fans. Although he started the season well, he has struggled under Amorim’s system. Amorim, known for his tactics and people skills, wants his players to be mentally and physically ready for the end of the season. He is giving Onana a break and using backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who played against Newcastle.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR UNITED AND ONANA?

Manchester United are preparing for important matches, starting with Thursday’s Europa League game against Lyon at Old Trafford. Onana is expected to play in that game as United aim to advance in Europe. The team also wants to finish strongly in the Premier League in Amorim’s first season as manager. With Amorim’s support, Onana has a chance to regain confidence and form during this crucial time.
