David Alaba will miss the rest of Real Madrid’s La Liga season after tearing the meniscus in his left knee. This adds to the club’s defensive problems.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Austrian defender tore the meniscus in his left knee. He had just returned after being out for more than a year with an ACL injury in the same knee. Medical tests showed he needs surgery soon. Real Madrid hopes to have him ready for the Club World Cup in June, but he won’t play in La Liga again this season.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Alaba’s injury is a big blow for Real Madrid, who are already struggling with many defensive injuries. Antonio Rüdiger, Dani Carvajal, Éder Militão, and Ferland Mendy are all injured. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has few options left. Alaba had only played seven league games this season. His return in January gave hope for better defense. Now, only Lucas Vázquez and Fran García are available, and young Raúl Asencio has been called up to help.

REAL MADRID’S SEASON SO FAR

Despite the injuries, Real Madrid are still in the race for the La Liga title with five games left. They recently played Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final without Alaba. The defense will be tested as they finish the domestic season. They also need to prepare for the Club World Cup in June, where they hope Alaba can play again.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR REAL MADRID?

Carlo Ancelotti has a tough challenge to organize his defense for the last five La Liga games. He may need to use midfielders in defense or continue to rely on young players like Asencio. With so many injuries, Real Madrid’s title chances could suffer. Meanwhile, the medical staff will work hard on Alaba’s recovery, aiming for him to play in the Club World Cup. But his participation is uncertain due to the seriousness of the injury.
