Kevin De Bruyne caused rumors about his future after scoring the winning goal against Wolves. He admitted he’s not sure yet but insisted he still plays at a high level.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Kevin De Bruyne scored a key goal to help Manchester City win against Wolves on Friday, May 2nd. That showed how good he is, even though he will leave the club this summer. The Belgian midfielder said he can still compete at the highest level. “I think I’ve shown that I can still play here… otherwise I don’t do what I do these last four or five weeks. That is it from my point!” De Bruyne said after scoring the winning goal. This was his second goal in City’s last four games. It showed how crucial he is to Pep Guardiola’s team, even if he is leaving soon.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
De Bruyne’s time at Manchester City has been amazing. Since coming from Wolfsburg in 2015, he has won 16 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2023. He was named Premier League Player of the Season twice during his ten years at the Etihad. City is currently in the top five of the Premier League, trying to qualify for Europe next season. De Bruyne had injuries the last two seasons that limited his minutes, but his quality is evident, and his recent form has been crucial for City’s campaign.
WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he is grateful for De Bruyne despite his pending exit. “Just thank you,” Guardiola said when asked about the midfielder. “His contribution in the game against Crystal Palace when we were 2-0 down and he delivers and today the goal again. I’m happy that it is finishing that way.” He said De Bruyne is “almost impossible to replace.” It’s not just about his performances, but also what “he means to the heart for our fans for many, many years.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR DE BRUYNE?
According to reports, MLS team Chicago Fire has held talks to sign De Bruyne on a free transfer this summer. His last home game at the Etihad will be against Bournemouth on May 20th, with away matches at Southampton and Fulham closing out his City stay. There is speculation if De Bruyne will feature in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, as his contract runs until June 30th. Guardiola admitted he’s not sure by saying that “it’s a new competition” and “he has to decide.” Regardless of his future, De Bruyne’s recent form indicates that the 33-year-old midfielder has plenty to offer at the highest level.
