Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti won’t share his future plans, even though rumors link him with the Brazil national team job. He knows what he wants to do, but he will not share his decision until May 25, after Real Madrid’s final La Liga match.
WHAT HAPPENED?
At a press conference before Real Madrid’s game against Celta Vigo on Sunday, Ancelotti got questions about his future but didn’t give details. The Italian manager made it clear he won’t say anything until the domestic season ends.
“I know very well what I do, what I plan to do and what I will do. But I won’t discuss my future today,” Ancelotti stated, stressing his respect and love for the club.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Rumors about Ancelotti leaving have grown quickly, with strong links to the Brazil national team job. Reports from The Athletic said he has already told people in the Madrid locker room that he plans to leave. A move to Brazil could happen as early as June.
Even though his contract lasts until 2026, Ancelotti’s unclear comments did not stop the rumors. He has had a very successful time with Real Madrid in two periods (2013-15 and 2021-present), winning three Champions Leagues and two La Liga titles.
Real Madrid is now second in La Liga, seven points behind leaders Barcelona with just three matches left. They were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals, which means this could be the first season without a trophy in Ancelotti’s second time at the club.
WHAT ANCELOTTI SAID ABOUT HIS EVENTUAL DEPARTURE
Ancelotti did not confirm when he might leave, but he was sure that whenever it happens, it will be on good terms. “My goodbye, whenever it happens – 2025, 2026, 2030 – it will be fantastic because I love this club and the club loves me,” the 65-year-old coach said.
He stressed the good relationship he has had with the club: “I will never fight with the club. Never have I done so in six years and I never will.”
WHAT NEXT FOR REAL MADRID?
Real Madrid has problems on the field as they get ready to play Celta Vigo on Sunday. They are seven points behind Barcelona with only nine points left to play for, so their La Liga title hopes are fading.
The team also has serious defensive injuries, with Antonio Rudiger, Ferland Mendy, and David Alaba all out for the rest of the season. Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao are also missing.
After this season, the focus will shift to Ancelotti’s replacement if he leaves. Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, who recently led his team to an unbeaten Bundesliga title, has been strongly linked with the job.
Madrid’s next game against Celta Vigo starts at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday at 21:00 local time.
