Inzaghi Calls De Jong “Sensational” After Champions League Semi-Final

Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi praised Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, calling him “sensational” and “world class” after their semi-final match.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Inter Milan reached the Champions League final with a 4-3 win over Barcelona in the second leg at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. While Lamine Yamal drew attention, Frenkie de Jong impressed Inzaghi. The Inter manager praised De Jong, saying he was just as impressive as Yamal in both matches.

“Frenkie de Jong impressed me just as much as Yamal. Always well-positioned to help the defense, always ready to clean up the ball,” Inzaghi said after the match. “I wouldn’t trade my players for anyone in the world, but he impressed me. It was something sensational.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite De Jong’s strong play, Barcelona was eliminated. The 28-year-old has been vital for Barcelona, helping them chase La Liga leaders Real Madrid. De Jong’s control in possession and defense have been key as Barcelona deals with injuries this season.

Inter Milan has already secured the Serie A title, winning their second straight championship with four games left. Their victory over Barcelona marks their second Champions League finals appearance in three years, showcasing Inzaghi’s impressive tenure since 2021. Inter currently lead rival AC Milan by 12 points in Italy’s top league.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Inter Milan now turn their attention to the Champions League final, where they will face Bayern Munich or Manchester City. The Germans hold a 2-1 lead going into their second-leg semi-final. The Champions League final is set for May 31 at Wembley’s iconic stadium in London, but first, Inter aim to end their league season on a high note against Sassuolo this weekend.

Barcelona must recover quickly before returning to La Liga play in a crucial battle with Villarreal on Sunday as they continue pushing to catch Real Madrid. Just three matches remain with Barca three points behind their biggest rivals for the title, meaning Xavi’s side needs maximum points. De Jong’s in-form play is key as they hope to close the season in a positive manner.
