Manchester United boss Rúben Amorim criticized his team, saying it’s been their “worst season in 40 years” despite doing well in the Europa League.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Amorim bluntly assessed his team’s poor Premier League season. The manager said even winning the Europa League won’t hide their bad domestic performance. He remarked, “We could be the worst United team in Premier League history with the Europa League title, but it won’t change anything. This season has been very disappointing. Nothing will change that.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
United sits 8th in the Premier League after losing 4-3 to Brentford. With 16 league losses, they risk missing European football next season. They trail Newcastle by seven points with three games left, making league qualification tough.
Yet, in the Europa League, United leads Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the semi-finals. Amorim sees this success as just a “shortcut,” not a fix to their big problems.
WHAT AMORIM SAID PREVIOUSLY
Amorim has criticized his team before. After a loss to Brentford, he said, “We cannot have another season like this. Of course, we know the context, but this kind of season we need to change that. They need to understand what it is to play for Manchester United.” He has been frustrated by their inconsistency and lack of character in domestic matches.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?
United plays Athletic Bilbao on Thursday in the Europa League semi-final second leg with a 3-0 lead. They also have three Premier League games left, facing Chelsea, Newcastle, and Brighton.
If they win the Europa League, they would qualify for the Champions League and bring some success to an otherwise bad season. But, Amorim said even European glory won’t remove the disappointment of such a poor Premier League campaign.
