Manchester United Say Bruno Fernandes Is Staying

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim has made it clear: They plan to keep captain Bruno Fernandes. This comes as other teams show interest in the midfielder.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Amorim has said again that Manchester United won’t sell Bruno Fernandes. “He is a leader, the captain. It is natural that people want Bruno… but we want to keep him at Man United,” Amorim said. Amorim also said Fernandes is “one of the top players in the world.” Rumors about Fernandes’ future are increasing. Reports say Saudi Pro League team Al Hilal wants to sign him.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fernandes signed a new United contract last August that keeps him at the club until 2027, with an option for another year. He has been outstanding this season. The 30-year-old has 19 goals and 18 assists in 52 games, including 9 assists in the Premier League. Despite United’s struggles this season, Fernandes has stayed on form. He also has a strong relationship with Amorim.

Reports say Al Hilal is offering Fernandes a salary package of £65 million per year. United say there is no release clause in his contract. The Saudi club targeted Fernandes after Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah signed a new contract.

WHAT NEXT FOR UNITED?

United could sell several first-team players as they look to balance their finances, but they say Fernandes will stay. United still could qualify for next season’s Champions League if they win the Europa League. They already hold a comfortable 3-0 lead on Athletic Club in the semifinals and could face Tottenham in the final.

Amorim said publicly that Fernandes will stay. When asked in March about rumors that Real Madrid wanted Fernandes, Amorim said: “No, it’s not going to happen. He’s not going anywhere because I’ve already told him.” United needs Fernandes to help them meet their goals for next season.
