Como Still Interested in Barcelona’s Eric García Despite Challenges

Como FC manager Cesc Fabregas has openly said he still wants to sign Barcelona defender Eric García. He called García a “versatile and very good player,” even though he knows making the deal happen is tough right now.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On May 9, in a press conference, Como head coach Cesc Fabregas talked about how much he likes Barcelona’s Eric García. He said the club is still interested in signing the versatile defender. “I confirm our interest in Barcelona’s Eric Garcia. I really like him: he’s versatile, a leader, and important for the team. But he’ll stay at Barcelona,” Fabregas said. This is the latest chapter in Como’s attempt to get the 24-year-old Spanish defender, which started in the January transfer window earlier this year.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Como’s interest in García is not new. The Italian club almost signed him during the January transfer window. Even though they were close to a deal, García stayed at Barcelona. He has since become more important in Hansi Flick’s squad. His value went up after he scored a key goal in Barcelona’s thrilling 5-4 Champions League win over Benfica in January. That seemed to secure his spot in the Catalan club’s plans.

Barcelona is currently in second place in La Liga, with just three games left in the 2024-25 season. They are seven points behind leaders Real Madrid. García has been a key player for Flick’s team, playing in 22 league matches and helping them maintain a strong defense, conceding just 28 goals this season.

COMO’S AMBITIOUS PROJECT

Como, who are pushing for a European qualification spot in their first season back in Serie A, have shown big ambitions in the transfer market under Fabregas’ leadership. The club has already signed several notable players this season. This includes goalkeeper Jean Butez, midfielder Maxence Caqueret, and forward Assane Diao, who has scored two goals in his first two Serie A games.

The Italian side have also signed former Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli on a free transfer, showing their pull for high-profile talents. Como are currently in 8th place in Serie A, just two points behind Roma who are in the Conference League qualification spot and four points behind Lazio who are in the final Europa League position with three games left.

WHAT NEXT FOR GARCÍA AND COMO?

Though Fabregas has admitted that García is likely to stay at Barcelona for now, Como’s ongoing interest suggests they may try again in the coming summer transfer window. Barcelona’s financial situation is still complicated, and they may need to sell players to balance their finances and make room for new signings.

Como’s immediate focus will be on their final three Serie A matches, starting with an important game against sixth-placed Lazio this Sunday. A win would be a big boost to their European qualification hopes, as they aim to end their return to Italy’s top flight with European football next season. Meanwhile, Barcelona will face Valencia tomorrow in La Liga as they aim to secure second place and gain momentum for next season.
