Vinicius Junior sidelined with ankle injury as Real Madrid season nears its end
Real Madrid have confirmed that star forward Vinicius Junior has suffered a sprain in his left ankle. This was revealed after tests carried out following Sunday’s dramatic El Clásico loss to Barcelona.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Vinicius Junior picked up the injury late in the 4-3 defeat to Barcelona at Montjuic Stadium. He was substituted after appearing in discomfort, and medical checks on Monday revealed the sprain. Real Madrid have not announced a timeline for his return, only stating that his recovery will be monitored in the coming days. Real Madrid winger Lucas Vazquez also left the field with a thigh injury, compounding problems for Los Blancos as they approach the end of the campaign.
IMPACT ON REAL MADRID’S SEASON
Vinicius’ injury comes at a difficult time. Real Madrid lost to league leaders Barcelona, falling seven points behind with just three La Liga games remaining. This result has almost ended their chances of defending the title, and makes a trophyless season likely. The team has also been hit by a series of injuries, with as many as nine first-team players unavailable for their next match. With coach Carlo Ancelotti set to leave for the Brazil national team, there is extra pressure to finish the season strongly, despite setbacks.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR VINICIUS AND REAL MADRID?
Real Madrid host Mallorca next in La Liga on Wednesday, before away games at Sevilla and Real Sociedad. These will be Ancelotti’s final matches in charge but there is hope that Vinicius might recover in time for the FIFA Club World Cup in June, although nothing is confirmed. Opponents Mallorca are in 13th place in La Liga whilst Real Madrid are second, seven points behind Barcelona and five ahead of Girona. The club will closely monitor Vinicius’ progress, but their focus may already be shifting to preparations for next season’s challenges.
