Sporting CP Clinch Back-to-Back League Titles to Make History
Sporting Clube de Portugal have made history by winning the Portuguese league for a second consecutive season. The Lisbon club sealed their 21st domestic title with a commanding 2-0 victory over Vitoria Guimaraes.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Sporting hosted Vitoria Guimaraes at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, knowing they needed a win to guarantee the title. Second-half goals from Pedro Goncalves and star striker Viktor Gyokeres sealed the three points. Meanwhile, Benfica were held to a 1-1 draw against Braga. Sporting finished the season with 82 points, two ahead of their rivals.
KEY PLAYERS AND SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
Gyokeres was the standout player and ended the season with 39 league goals in 33 appearances. Over his last two campaigns, he has scored a record 108 goals across all competitions.
Sporting have overcome managerial sackings and star player exits over the two title-winning seasons. Managing director Frederico Varandas said, “It’s unbelievable. It’s the culmination of 11 years that began with a president bringing stability and a manager, Ruben Amorim, who revolutionised the team. It’s an amazing day for the club!”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR SPORTING?
Attention turns to the summer transfer window, with Gyokeres expected to be a target for top European clubs. Reports in England have linked him with a move to the Premier League for around €200m (£173m/$213m).
Sporting will lose key players on free transfers but could have a healthy summer budget to rebuild the squad and challenge for a third league title in a row.
