Viktor Gyökeres Focused on Sporting’s Success Amid Transfer Speculation
Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres is not thinking about his future right now. Instead, he wants to celebrate Sporting’s league title and win the upcoming Taça de Portugal final. This is despite interest from top Premier League clubs reportedly chasing him.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Gyökeres was asked about his future after a great season in Portugal. He replied, “My next club? We can’t predict the future. We never know what happens. I’m focused now on celebrating this title and try win the Taça de Portugal.” His comments come as Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United reportedly compete for his signature. Gyökeres scored in Sporting’s 2-0 win over Vitoria Guimaraes as they won another league title. He has 39 league goals in 33 appearances this season. Sporting faces Benfica in the Portuguese Cup final on May 25, and this could be Gyökeres’ last match for the club.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Gyökeres, who has 98 goals in his first 100 appearances at the Portuguese club, is on the radar of several top clubs. Arsenal appear to be leading the race to sign him after another disappointing campaign without a trophy, with all three parties—the Gunners, Sporting, and Gyökeres—reportedly open to a deal. He was understood to be valued around €70 million. Sporting are also preparing for his potential exit in the summer and have identified Yuri Alberto as a possible replacement for their star striker.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Sporting now turn their attention to the Taça de Portugal final against Benfica, aiming for a domestic double. Benfica, who narrowly missed out on the league title by a point, are also hungry for silverware. Meanwhile, Arsenal are focused on rebuilding their squad in the summer as they eye a top striker. The Premier League club finished third in the league table, just a point behind second-placed Liverpool and two behind champions Manchester City.
